The Life Shop

Plumfield Kids Book Review by Elsa, age 11

Before ever having picked up this book, I was told that it resembled the Mysterious Benedict Society (MBS). Having loved the MBS as a read aloud I was naturally excited to start this one. And was blown away by the depth and truth of this book. It was so engaging! It made me laugh, cry, and almost bite all my nails off (a bad habit I am seriously trying to break)!

It always amazes me how one author can have so many different writing styles. For instance, Margaret McAllister. She can write a sweet children’s book like A Friend for Rachel, or a deep, heartwarming story such as Hold My Hand And Run, or The Life Shop, fast-paced and thrilling. Another fun piece to this book is the names of the characters, Lorna, Kieron, and Fern! Definitely unique and so fun to say as I read!

This book is a brilliant example of good children’s literature. It is good, wholesome and very intriguing. Once I picked it up I couldn’t put it down. Lorna was the kind of character I could relate to. She wants to do the right thing, but isn’t quite sure what the right thing is. She plays the piano, and has dreams of being a famous musician! All in all, this book is a treasure and one that will remain a favorite on my shelf forever.
