The Reuben Stories
The Reuben stories are four of the most lovely picture books I have read in the last year. I found Reuben and the Blizzard at a thrift store and fell in love.
Wolf Hollow by Lauren Wolk
As I read Wolf Hollow, I found myself depressed and frustrated throughout the story, and I didn’t find a powerful redeeming theme.
Librarian Notices: Written Treasures Library
I wasn’t always a book hoarder, but l’ve always loved to read. I was born and raised in the Philippines in a family of readers, and my siblings and I grew up reading Enid Blyton, the Bobbsey Twins, Nancy Drew, and the Hardy Boys. But we also read children’s classics — I have fond memories of my Ate (older sis) and I taking an hour-long bus ride, backpacks in tow, to this dome-shaped building dwarfed by skyscrapers, right in the very heart of the financial district. It was a church founded over a century ago for American expatriates, and inside was a little library — a regular library to everyone else, but THE Secret Garden to me. We filled our backpacks with Black Beauty and the like, and devoured them at home before our next trip to this magical place.
Come On, Rain!
Come On, Rain! by Karen Hesse is a lovely story that transports me back to the hot and sticky days of summer from my childhood.
Thunderstorm
In Thunderstorm we follow a violent storm through Midwest farm country. This nearly wordless book is rich with detailed illustrations…
The Shy Stegosaurus of Indian Springs
“‘You see, everything changes, the world and everything in it. Everything but me. Goodby, little friends.’ They stood openmouthed, but no words came to them. There was so much they wanted to say. They wanted to persuade him to remain, to explain how much he had done for them, and to assure him that the…

The Crab Ballet
Someone gave me a couple of readers from All About Learning, and I had never seen that series before. I also had never heard of the author, Renee M. LaTulippe, so I went to her website and discovered this book. Miraculously, our public library had it. This illustration made me laugh out loud. I know…
Blackout and All Clear
Wow. Truly, wow! It is safe to say that Blackout and All Clear are on my top twenty if not top ten list. Thank you, Connie Willis. This one is special.
The Mark of the Thief Series
The Mark of the Thief Series is one of my favorite Nielsen stories so far, because it is set near the end of the Roman Empire.
The Fifth of March
I am frustrated and disappointed in The Fifth of March. I can only speculate that Rinaldi thought she was inviting young readers into challenging questions…
Casey Over There by Staton Rabin
Casey Over There is a gentle introduction to WWI for young readers from the perspective of Americans waiting for news of their loved ones “over there.”
The Shakespeare Stealer
There is a lot to enjoy and appreciate about The Shakespeare Stealer, especially for lovers of theater and Shakespeare…
